Behavior change through innovation
Bringing digital tools into your work with patients
Question
What must clinicians understand when integrating digital tech into practice?
Answer
Start small, iterate, and build. One of the game-changing lessons I’ve learned as an academic clinical psychologist who researches apps for mental health is to embrace starting small when it comes to introducing digital interventions in your practice. As clinical psychologists, our main superpower is helping people change their behavior. Digital interventions such as mobile apps, digital therapeutics, and wearable tech can help us do that, because they can offer people support outside of therapy sessions in the moments of need that happen throughout their daily lives.
Holidays don’t have to mean excess stress. It’s time to reframe your thoughts
This season has the potential to create a multitude of worries. However, you can also view it as an opportunity to enhance psychological well-being.
Stress and holidays seem to go hand-in-hand.
As your busy schedule becomes even busier with preparations and celebrations, it may be a good time to try to reframe your thinking about the holidays. Instead of dreading the likely stress ahead, you can view the holidays as an opportunity to enhance your psychological well-being. APA offers these tips to help lessen holiday stress and feel more optimistic about the season:
Take time for yourself. You may feel pressured to be everything to everyone. But remember that you’re only one person and can only accomplish certain things. Sometimes self-care is the best thing you can do; plus, others will benefit when you’re feeling less stressed. Reflect on aspects of your life that give you joy; go for a long walk; get a massage; or take time to listen to your favorite music or read a new book. All of us need some time to recharge our batteries. Be mindful and focus on the present rather than dwell on the past or worry about the future.
How to help children and teens manage their stress
Stress is at historic highs. Here are healthy ways for children and teens to cope
In the short term, stress can push a child to practice for her piano recital or inspire a teen to study when he’d rather be out with friends. But chronic stress—for example, from unrelenting school pressures, social unrest, or violence—is different. Left unchecked, long-term stress can contribute to a long list of physical and mental health problems. Prolonged stress can cause high blood pressure, weaken the immune system, and contribute to diseases such as obesity and heart disease. It can also lead to mental health problems such as anxiety and depression—disorders that are becoming more common in youth.
Mental illness is at an all-time high—especially among children. In fact, between 2016 and 2020, the number of children aged 3 to 17 diagnosed with anxiety grew by 29% and those with depression by 27%, according to a study published in 2022 in JAMA Pediatrics.
Stress in young people doesn’t always look like stress in adults. But like adults, children and teens—even those with life-altering losses—can find healthy ways to cope. Together, young people and their parents or caregivers can learn to spot the signs of excess stress and, with the right tools, manage it.

Practicing Meditation to Overcome Loneliness
Loneliness is a negative feeling, a feeling of uneasiness and discomfort. It arises when the social and relationship requirements are not fulfilled. It is a state of mind that makes people feel alone, prefer solitude, and presume to be unwanted. Loneliness can have a serious impact on physical and mental health. It is linked to anxiety, depression, poor self-regulation, substance addiction, and eating disorders. Lack of social connection leads to loneliness and heightened anxiety. Moreover, loneliness increases the risk of low self-esteem and sleep problems. The stereotypes associated with loneliness lead to overlooking people who are suffering from this problem and struggling with their mental health. Therapy, counselling, and practicing mindfulness, meditation, self-care, and emotional wellness are some methods that can be effective in coming out of loneliness. Practicing meditation can help to overcome the pain and suffering associated with loneliness.
Meditation and Mindfulness: Effective Exercises for Reducing Anxiety
By Joshua Ryan
Meditation and mindfulness practices have emerged as powerful tools for fostering mental clarity, reducing anxiety, and enhancing overall well-being. Individuals who regularly engage in these practices often report improved cognitive functions, heightened emotional stability, and a greater sense of success in both personal and professional domains. The myriad benefits of mindfulness extend across various psychological conditions, offering relief to those grappling with anger, stress, anxiety, depression, and even more complex disorders such as schizophrenia. In this article, we will delve into a collection of mindfulness exercises specifically designed to combat anxiety and promote emotional resilience.
The Body Scan is a widely recognized mindfulness exercise that requires minimal equipment, making it especially accessible for beginners. This practice not only enhances self-awareness but also fosters a deep connection between the mind and body.
This month, we’re highlighting how some of our GYMHA members are using innovative apps to provide immediate support to users worldwide. These tools are transforming how help is sought, given, and experienced in daily life.

Summary
Panel Talk on Personal Care and Men’s Day
Jude initiated a discussion about a panel talk scheduled for 15 minutes, focusing on personal care and International Men’s Day. The panelists were given 5 minutes each to answer questions, with a closing remark at the end. The meeting was set to last a maximum of 1 hour and 30 minutes. Steven was expected to start the conference, but he was not present at the beginning of the meeting. Jude also mentioned that Joshua and Nahid were present. The meeting was delayed as they waited for other panelists to join, including Dr. Rania and Hie Excellency Ambassador, Professor Oluwafemi Esan. The discussion also touched on the International Men’s Day and its global message for the year.
Promoting Men’s Health and Equality
Ahamba led a discussion on men’s health, marking the International Men’s Day. The panelists included Dr. Rania Lampou and Joshua Ryan. The focus was on promoting positive male role models, addressing men’s health issues, and encouraging actions for gender equality. Dr. Rania emphasized the importance of discussing mental health and suicide prevention, as men often face high rates of mental health issues. Joshua Ryan expressed his support for the event and its aim to improve men’s lives. The discussion also included a question about the most significant health challenges currently facing men globally and how to change the narrative around men’s health.
Addressing Global Men’s Health Challenges
Rania discusses the significant health challenges facing men globally, highlighting cardiovascular disease, mental health issues like depression and suicide, cancer, obesity, respiratory diseases, infectious diseases, and violence as major concerns. She emphasizes the need for gender-responsive approaches to address the unique health needs of men and women at different life stages. Rania also notes regional disparities, with infectious diseases being more prevalent in sub-Saharan Africa and South Asia, violence and injury in Latin America and the Caribbean, and chronic diseases like cancer and heart disease in developed countries. The discussion underscores the importance of early interventions and socioeconomic factors in addressing men’s health challenges worldwide.
Promoting Men’s Health Awareness and Education
The meeting discussed the challenges and importance of promoting awareness and education around men’s health issues, particularly in underrepresented communities. The statistics showed that men have a higher death rate than women, with 200 deaths per 1,000 men compared to 133 for women. The conversation also highlighted the need for men to acknowledge and confront their emotional challenges, as societal norms often inhibit them from seeking help. The importance of accessible healthcare, flexible appointment times, and inclusive environments was emphasized. The conversation ended with the introduction of Professor Oluwafemi Esan, who was invited to share his insights on the topic.
Transpersonal Mental Health and Spirituality
Professor Oluwafemi introduced the concept of transpersonal mental health, which integrates spiritual and transcendent aspects of human experience within modern psychology. He explained that transpersonal psychology views the self as tripathi, consisting of a spiritual, soul, and biological component. The Professor emphasized that mental health interventions should not exclude the spiritual aspect, as it is essential for building mental resilience. He also discussed the limitations of the eurocentric medical model, which focuses on the duality of mind and body, and how it fails to address spiritual aspects of mental health. The Professor concluded by explaining how developing spiritual health can lead to a sense of vision and hope for the future, which is crucial for mental well-being.
Promoting Men’s Health Awareness and Education
The meeting discussed the importance of promoting awareness and education around men’s health, particularly in underprivileged communities. The participants highlighted the need for evidence-based strategies and flexible appointment options for healthcare services. They also emphasized the role of community engagement and education of healthcare workers in promoting preventive measures. The discussion touched on the issue of mental health and its impact on overall health, with a focus on destigmatizing the seeking of help. The participants agreed on the importance of addressing mental health issues and promoting emotional well-being for men.
Addressing Men’s Mental Health Issues
The speaker, Nahid highlights the importance of addressing men’s mental health issues through education, awareness campaigns, and integrating mental health into primary care. He emphasizes that men often express emotional distress through physical symptoms rather than directly expressing emotions. The speaker suggests training healthcare providers to recognize signs of mental health issues and provide support. He also notes that community programs and workplace health initiatives can play a crucial role in promoting men’s mental well-being and preventing unhealthy coping mechanisms like substance abuse.
Improving Men’s Health in Workplaces
Rania discussed the importance of bringing healthcare to workplaces to improve men’s access to preventive health services. She highlighted initiatives like the Australian Men’s Shed Association and the Men’s Health Forum in the UK that aim to improve men’s health through policy change, education, and community involvement. AHAMBA then asked Joshua about strategies businesses can implement to foster a culture of health and wellness among male employees. Joshua emphasized the importance of reducing workload and ensuring job control and demand are not overbearing. Udeme suggested incorporating health and sports programs to help men ease stress and stay healthy. The discussion also touched on the role of technology and digital solutions in enhancing men’s health initiatives, with a focus on clear communication and one-to-one interactions.
Telehealth and Mental Health Importance
Prof. Dr. Pramod emphasized the importance of telehealth services, mobile health apps, wearable technology, data-driven insights, and digital health solutions in improving healthcare. He highlighted how these technologies can help track health metrics, prevent health issues, and provide insights into a person’s health trajectory. He also praised Rania’s resilience and mental health strength, drawing parallels between her personal experiences and the importance of mental health awareness. He concluded by expressing his respect for Rania and her strength.
Addressing Gaps in Men’s Health Funding
In the meeting, the speakers discussed the importance of addressing gaps in funding for men’s health research and ensuring equitable distribution of funds. They emphasized the need for better utilization of resources and the importance of data collection to inform research priorities. The speakers also highlighted the need to break down cultural barriers that prevent men from seeking care and to promote open conversations about men’s health. They stressed the importance of integrating men’s health into national policies and enhancing access to care. The conversation ended with a call for collective effort to prioritize men’s health research and promote open conversations.
