As we step into May 2023, we embark on a journey into one of the most significant aspects of human well-being – mental health. This year’s theme, “Look Around, Look Within,” serves as a reminder that mental health affects us all; it is an issue that touches every individual, family, and community worldwide.
The pandemic has brought to light the severity of mental health issues and the critical need for their awareness and mitigation. Global studies reveal that over 700 million people are affected by mental illness, and nearly half of all disabilities are associated with mental health disorders. According to the World Health Organization (WHO), depression will be the leading cause of disability worldwide by 2030.
Addressing mental health requires a collective effort, and Mental Health Awareness Month 2023 offers a unified platform where individuals, communities, and organizations can come together to raise awareness, promote understanding, and reduce stigma.
This year’s theme, “Look Around, Look Within,” invites us all to examine our surroundings and ourselves, to become empathetic and inclusive, and to recognize that mental health requires equal attention to physical health. The theme encourages us to see beyond ourselves and consider the diverse experiences of others around us, to build caring communities that support mental wellness and healing.
Mental health issues affect people of all ages, races, and backgrounds. Yet, many individuals struggle silently due to a lack of assistance, social and economic pressures, trauma, and adverse life experiences. By looking around and finding ways to help, we create a supportive and safe environment for all individuals who may be struggling.
Looking within ourselves can also help us identify potential mental health concerns and be proactive in seeking the help we need. Self-reflection, self-care, and regular mental health check-ups are essential practices that promote resilience and healing.
This Mental Health Awareness Month, let us all take a stand and help reduce the stigma surrounding mental illness. Let us come together to support one another, to share knowledge, and to seek help if needed. By standing together, we can create communities that foster wellness, healing, and resilience for all.
