Suicidal thoughts, also known as suicidal ideation, refer to thoughts, feelings, or plans to harm or end one’s own life.

These thoughts can range from Passive thoughts to active thoughts and Urgent thoughts.

Suicidal thoughts can be triggered by notable factors or stressors such as; Economic Stress, Workplace Stress, Social Stress, Environmental Stress, Political Stress, and Healthcare-Related Stress.

It’s pertinent to note that everyone’s experience with stress is unique. What maybe stressful for one person may not be the same for another.

Here are some warning signs displayed by people with suicidal thoughts:

. Withdrawal from social activities

. Changes in mood or behavior

. Increased substance abuse

. Expressing hopelessness and helplessness

. Unexpected anger or aggression

. Giving away possessions or making final arrangements.

 

Below are a few solutions to help curb suicidal thoughts:

. Mindfulness and meditation

. Exercise and physical activities

. Writing educative articles

. Connect with loved ones and friends

. Challenge negative thoughts

. Practice self-care (relaxation, hobbies, etc)

. Set realistic goals and celebrate accomplishment.

Most times we’re quick to offer solutions to already established problems rather than adopting practical measures to prevent the problem.

Prevention tips:

. Reduce stigma around mental health discussions

. Encourage open conversation

. Support mental health initiatives and advocacy

. Foster a supportive community.

Remember, suicidal thoughts are not a sign of weakness. Suicidal thoughts are treatable, and seeking help is a sign of strength. With support and resources, individuals can overcome these feelings and find hope and healing.
