Using AI to Support Young People in Mental Health

By Professor Dr. Evone Botros

Using AI to support young people in mental health requires careful consideration of their unique needs, as well as adherence to ethical principles that prioritize their privacy, autonomy, and well-being. Here are key approaches to achieve this:

  1. Develop Safe and User-Centric Tools
  • Personalized Support: Create AI tools tailored to the mental health needs of young people, such as chatbots for emotional support or apps for stress management and mindfulness.
  • Empathy-Driven Design: Use natural language processing (NLP) to ensure AI interactions are empathetic and non-judgmental.
  • Youth-Informed Design: Involve young people in the development process to ensure tools address their specific concerns and preferences.
  1. Prioritize Privacy and Data Protection
  • Anonymization: Ensure data is anonymized and cannot be traced back to individual users.
  • Minimal Data Collection: Collect only essential information and avoid unnecessary data gathering.
  • Secure Storage: Use robust encryption and secure servers to protect sensitive information.
  • Parental Consent and Rights: Where necessary, involve parents while respecting young people’s rights to privacy as per applicable laws.

Connect With Nature for Mental Well-being

By Dr. Anjum Nazir Qureshi

Staying close to nature has several benefits. Although we think about progress in life through urbanization, technology, and going digital, our health is the priority. Taking our time out of digital devices to spend time with nature and connect with the natural environment makes us feel love from the inside. It improves our physical, mental, emotional, and spiritual health.

A quote by Frank Llyod Wright explains the human-nature connection: “Study nature, love nature, live close to nature. It will never fail you.” Imagine how you feel when a cool breeze or the warmth of the sun touches you. Electronic devices, social media, and busy lifestyles have disconnected us from nature. Looking at the increasing cases of anxiety, stress, and mental issues, globally, it is crucial to develop that reconnection with nature. Human beings have been genetically conditioned to remain connected with nature. Once they lose this connection, they experience loneliness and unhappiness.

Navigating Difficult Emotions: Tips for Managing Grief and Maintaining Mental Well-being

By MaryAnne Ifeoma

Managing grief is an experience that can be quite challenging. Grief is an emotional response to loss and can be manifested in different ways, such as sadness, guilt, anger, or numbness. The grief can be as a result of the death of a loved one, an end of a relationship, or the diagnosis of a chronic illness. The way it’s managed varies from one individual to the other.

Here are a few coping strategies:

  • It’s ok to give yourself some time to grief: It’s not a sign of weakness or defeat. Do not attempt to suppress your emotions or deny that it exists. It’s a process.
  • Seek support: It’s important to reach out to friends, relatives, therapist for emotional support, and guidance. Isolating yourself will further disrupt the healing process.
  • Practice Self Care: This might seem hard to do especially when the zeal to pick up is reduced. Let that inner voice speak to your heart and make you understand that you still have a beautiful life ahead of you. Observe quality rest, eat healthy and engage in physical activities that will take your mind off the problem.
  • Practice self-compassion: Do not blame yourself. Be kind to yourself.
  • Take breaks: Change environment if you can. Change routines by engaging in more activities that help you relax.
  • In a situation whereby your grieving process poses any emotional threat to you, please seek help from a mental health professional.

Remember, there’s no particular approach to managing grief.  Be kind and patient to yourself as you go through the grieving process.

This article explores how parents, educators, and policymakers can safeguard the personal “fingerprint”-the unique essence-of Generation Alpha while helping them thrive in the digital age.

  1. Understanding Generation Alpha’s Digital Landscape

– Data Exploitation: Their personal information is often collected, analyzed, and monetized.

– Loss of Individuality: Algorithms may influence their choices, interests, and even self-perception.

– Overdependence on Technology: Excessive reliance on digital tools may hinder their emotional and psychological development.
